Ruth’s story on how she deals with staring strangers her son Sam
has a Nasal Tip Haemangioma
I have gone through different stages when confronted with people
who stare. Sometimes, when I am feeling particularly benevolent,
I will smile back. Other times, if they are staring in an aggressive
way, I will stare back at them until they look away. This has
proved to be quite tiring though, as it's tough to keep up with everyone
looking at us. I'm beginning to realise though, that I'm
much happier if I just try and ignore them.
The only place that people actually speak to me about Sam's H is in
our local supermarket (normally around the bread aisle!). You
can tell from the way that they ask whether they are kind, or just
nosy. If I think they're being rude, I'll say " it's a tumour",
(which it is, only a benign kind) - that normally shuts them up.
Otherwise, I will try to explain. I do feel very proud of
Sam and I think that in some way, I do have a 'duty' to try and inform
people about Haemangiomas.
Sometimes, I get into nice conversations with people when they tell
me about their niece or nephew, or grandchild etc. who also had an H
of some kind.
The staring is getting easier though. When he was a newborn, strangers
used to peer into the pram an awful lot more. Now they don't so
much. He has such a lovely, cheerful face, and he is usually shouting
at the top of his voice, I can't blame anyone for looking anymore!
